Former Indian opening batsman Wasim Jaffer described Babar Azam as a skilled player but argued that equating him with Virat Kohli is inappropriate. Jaffer suggested that such comparisons have contributed to a decline in the Pakistani batsman’s recent performances. He noted that media in Pakistan has excessively promoted Babar.

Kohli ranks second among batters for the highest number of international centuries and runs at the elite level. While Kohli’s career progresses upward, Babar has faced a form slump.

‘Babar is undoubtedly a strong performer and has delivered impressive results. I admire his abilities as a batsman. However, I believe he was overhyped beyond his actual standing. Comparisons to Virat Kohli began, and supporters along with media in Pakistan elevated him to an exalted status. I think this contributed to his struggles,’ Jaffer stated in a video shared on X.

‘When those around you treat you that way, with media dubbing you a king, unwarranted parallels to Virat emerged. This likely created mental strain. He attempted to emulate Kohli’s style and role in the Indian side. But Virat stands as one of the top players of his era. In my view, the excessive media attention triggered his decline,’ he continued.

Jaffer also critiqued Babar’s leadership of the Pakistan team, stating that he failed to develop a robust squad during his tenure.

‘Additionally, his captaincy fell short. He had opportunities but did not construct the team effectively. He couldn’t secure consistent victories. Even though the team reached the T20 World Cup final, which showed potential, he didn’t elevate Pakistan cricket to its peak when possible,’ the ex-Indian player remarked.

‘He remains one of Pakistan’s premier batters in the current generation, without question,’ he concluded.
