Punjab Kings’ spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule attributes the team’s undefeated streak in the 2026 IPL season to the solid foundation of culture and principles established by head coach Ricky Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer starting from the previous year.
Bahutule explained that the framework built last season has carried over, fostering clear roles and strong teamwork. Despite not reaching the finals previously, the emphasis on values has continued, with effective collaboration between the captain and coach ensuring a focused approach to each match.
He highlighted the high-stakes nature of the tournament and stressed the importance of staying present, analyzing opponents, and adapting to conditions like afternoon games. The team plans to progress step by step.
Bahutule commended the bowling unit’s performance, particularly in the final overs, crediting fast bowling coach James Hopes for guiding pacers such as Arshdeep Singh, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Xavier Bartlett, and Marco Jansen. The strategy focuses on simplicity, clear execution, and optimal use of bowlers across phases.
Having observed Shreyas Iyer’s progress from their shared Mumbai background, Bahutule praised the captain’s leadership, composure, and ability to inspire the team and support staff. Iyer’s calm demeanor aids clear decision-making under pressure and helps maximize player potential.
Addressing potential pressure from their winning run, Bahutule noted upcoming challenges but expressed faith in the team’s balanced lineup, depth in batting, and strong middle and death-over bowling, while identifying room for improvement in new-ball efforts.
