Senior civil servants in the United Kingdom will receive performance bonuses for the first time under a revised pay structure. Cabinet Office minister Darren Jones stated that the changes aim to reward effective workers rather than those focused on discussion. Most civil servants are set to receive a 3.5 percent salary increase, while senior officials will see a 2.5 percent base rise with an additional 1 percent reserved for top performers. The performance-related pay concept originated as a trial under the previous Conservative government and has been advanced by the current Labour administration. Jones indicated that the government seeks to provide larger but fewer bonuses to exceptional staff who exceed expectations. The lowest pay band for senior civil servants will also receive a £5,000 uplift. Union representative Lauren Crowley welcomed the overall award as competitive with other public sector increases and inflation but noted that broader pay progression for most civil servants remains unresolved.
