The UK government will introduce performance bonuses for senior civil servants for the first time. Cabinet Office minister Darren Jones said the measure is designed to reward officials who deliver results rather than those focused on discussion. Most civil servants will receive a 3.5% pay rise, while senior staff will get a 2.5% base increase, with 1% set aside for bonuses to the highest performers. The concept originated as a trial under the previous Conservative government and has been taken forward by Labour. Jones stated that the aim is to grant higher but fewer bonuses to those who exceed expectations. The government declined a recommended 3.5% rise for senior grades to retain funds for these payments. An additional £5,000 uplift will apply to the lowest senior pay band. The FDA union, which represents senior civil servants, described the overall award as positive compared with other public sector settlements and inflation, while calling for similar pay progression measures for the wider workforce.
