The Latin Church has alleged last-minute interference that prevented a representative from receiving a ministerial position. The V.D. Satheeshan administration has begun efforts to address the situation after Latin Catholic leaders intensified objections to their exclusion, despite expectations of inclusion until the final stages of cabinet formation. Fr. Manoj conveyed the Church’s frustration, claiming that manipulation occurred in the process denying the community a seat in the new ministry.

His remarks highlighted rising resentment within the Latin Catholic Church, which had anticipated a cabinet post until the conclusion of government formation. The abrupt omission surprised the group and left it feeling marginalized, with Fr. Manoj attributing the outcome to external interference.

Observers note that Congress could not disregard the Muslim League’s request for a fifth minister, as the alternative demand involved the deputy chief minister position. Historical precedent shows even senior Congress figures previously yielded to similar League requests during earlier coalition talks.

Following the 2026 assembly elections, the Muslim League holds 22 seats within the 102-member United Democratic Front legislative party. League representatives argue their backing enabled several Congress candidates to secure victories.

Fr. Manoj stated that the Church will maintain its protests until the matter receives resolution. Muslim League minister E.V. Abdul Gafoor and Congress officials have initiated outreach efforts. Gafoor described his meeting with Church leaders as a routine courtesy call and emphasized the government’s intent to include all groups.

Since the Latin Church’s concerns became public, United Democratic Front leaders have pursued immediate reconciliation. Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan along with ministers K. Muraleedharan and C.P. John have met Latin Church representatives, with further discussions anticipated. Latin Christian voters influence outcomes in coastal regions and the Ernakulam parliamentary seat, prompting close attention to upcoming steps by Congress and its allies.
