Senior IAS officer Neelam Meena was appointed Monday as the new chief electoral officer of West Bengal. The move follows the recent elevation of Manoj Kumar Agarwal to the post of state chief secretary.

A letter from the Election Commission to the state chief secretary stated that Meena, a 1998-batch IAS officer from the West Bengal cadre, will serve as CEO. She will not carry any additional state government responsibilities in the role.

Agarwal received his promotion shortly after the BJP assumed power in the state. He had managed the special intensive revision of electoral rolls before the assembly elections and supervised the charged polling process.

The state government had sent a list of three senior IAS officers to the Election Commission for the CEO position. The nominees included Neelam Meena, Tanmay Chakrabarty and Moumita Godara Basu.
