A fresh complaint has been filed against Abhishek Banerjee over a social media post, with the complainant claiming it could disturb communal harmony, a police officer said on Thursday. The complaint was lodged at Bhawanipur Police Station by Arnab Kanti Das, who called the post by the Diamond Harbour MP highly irresponsible. Police confirmed that a copy of the post from May 2 was submitted with the complaint. The post showed Kalyan Banerjee challenging the Centre and the Election Commission to use all their power to defeat Trinamool in Falta, part of the Diamond Harbour constituency, on the day repolling was announced there. The complainant argued that the word gang used to describe the Gujarati community carries negative connotations linked to crime and the underworld. Labelling an entire community this way goes against the law and the spirit of unity in diversity, Das wrote. A preliminary inquiry has begun. We have received the complaint and started a probe. Further legal steps will follow based on the findings, a senior Kolkata Police officer told PTI. The complaint follows an earlier FIR registered against Banerjee at Bidhannagar Cyber Crime police station over alleged provocative remarks at a public rally on April 27. Police said any further action will depend on the outcome of the current inquiry.
