A recent study uses North Korea as a case to examine economic activity in opaque regimes and data-poor areas through satellite imagery and secret price reports. North Korea stands as the most closed economic system. Basic questions about whether its economy is growing or contracting remain hard to resolve. The nation releases no trustworthy figures, limits external contact, and classifies trade information as secret.
Even closed economies produce indirect traces, however. The task lies in interpreting those signals correctly.
In research published in World Development, scholars from the University of California San Diego and Ewha Womans University present methods to estimate economic conditions where official data are scarce by design or default.
“The issue extends well beyond North Korea,” noted co-author Stephan Haggard. “Such black holes appear in authoritarian states that restrict information, conflict zones where data systems fail, and remote areas lacking statistical capacity.”
North Korea offers the clearest example, serving as a test for techniques usable elsewhere.
The study describes this work as forensic economics, rebuilding realities from fragments. Tools include satellite images, aid agency reports, partner trade records, price tracking, refugee interviews, and text analysis.
No method suffices alone. Stronger results come from combining sources to cross-check findings.
“We know more than many expect,” said co-author Munseob Lee. “Noisy data still yield insights when multiple approaches are merged and verified.”
Nighttime satellite lights are now common in development studies. Other techniques are less standard.
One relies on secret price collection inside North Korea. Surveyors gather costs for rice, appliances, and fuel, then send details via border cell networks despite risks. Private firms run by defectors compile the figures for officials and analysts.
Price shifts can indicate sanction effects or new trade ties.
“Sudden changes in restricted goods or new products signal policy impacts,” explained co-author Kyoochul Kim.
Another approach scans state media for clues. Reports of official visits name factories and sites, which researchers match with imagery to track activity.
The authors note that control systems can generate observable data unintentionally.
The same tools apply in Iran under sanctions, wartime Russia and Ukraine, and conflict zones in Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
Artificial intelligence advances further aid extraction from propaganda and leaks.
