Electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh have received temporary relief after the state regulatory commission suspended a surcharge that Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited planned to add to June bills. The fuel adjustment charge would have raised payments by about 10 percent. The Electricity Consumer Council challenged the levy before the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission, claiming it breached regulations and would impose extra costs on millions of households. The commission asked UPPCL for its response and ordered that the surcharge remain off June bills until a final ruling. UPPCL had issued the charge on May 29 to recover higher power purchase and transmission expenses, stating the step followed current rules. The adjustment applied to March usage and was set to appear on June statements.
