Farmers who receive water from the Kelavarapalli Dam in Krishnagiri district have urged the Water Resources Department and the Tamil Nadu government to stop the buildup of toxic foam in the reservoir. The dam gets inflows after rainfall in Karnataka. In recent years, higher water inflows have been accompanied by foam caused by sewage reportedly released from Karnataka. Farmers say repeated requests for measures have not resolved the problem. After rains in Karnataka in June 2026, inflows rose and foam has since collected in the dam. Local farmer Thimmaiya noted that foam appears whenever inflows exceed 400 cusecs, while lower flows produce none. Officials have linked the foam to elevated sulphate and phosphate levels from the sewage entering the Then Pennai River. He called on authorities to raise the matter with Karnataka to halt the discharges.
