Churachandpur/Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Churachandpur on July 4 to attend the funeral of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte. The trip occurred under tight security amid protests by some Kuki community members. It marked the first visit by a state chief minister to the hill district since ethnic violence began in May 2023. The chief minister arrived by helicopter.

At the funeral in Dorcas Veng, he expressed sorrow over the May 2023 attack on Valte in Imphal. He regretted his absence during the incident, calling it a lasting personal tragedy. He noted the outcome might have differed had he been present. Khemchand described Valte as a calm and dedicated leader and recalled their early interactions during the violence. He offered condolences to the family.

In response to reporters, the chief minister stated that restoring peace remains essential for Manipur’s development. Several Kuki groups had opposed the visit and called for a boycott until a political resolution emerges. Shops stayed closed during a shutdown, and protesters blocked Tiddim Road, leading to increased security.

The chief minister was joined by MLA Tongbram Robindro Singh. Vungzagin Valte, a three-time BJP legislator from Thanlon, died on February 20, 2026, after long treatment for injuries from the 2023 attack. Some observers viewed the visit as a step toward reconciliation despite ongoing divisions.
