India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission has produced another important scientific result. Researchers report that soil at the landing site closely matches the first lunar meteorite ever recovered on Earth. The findings improve understanding of the Moon’s geological past and indicate that the explored region holds material from several layers of the lunar crust.

The study, published in Nature by Isro scientists, examines measurements gathered by the mission and sheds new light on how repeated impacts have altered the lunar surface across billions of years.

At Shiv Shakti Point near the south polar region, instruments compared the makeup of local soil and rocks with laboratory analysis of the Calcalong Creek meteorite, the earliest confirmed lunar meteorite collected on Earth.
