A goal involves more than simply directing a ball into the net. Azzedine Ounahi’s strike in the 50th minute during Morocco’s 3-0 victory against Canada at the FIFA World Cup demonstrated notable skill. All ten Canadian defenders were positioned in the area as Ounahi shot. The ball passed three defenders and the goalkeeper before reaching the net.
Canada had created five scoring opportunities earlier, including one clear chance for Tani Oluwaseyi. Morocco had managed only one prior attempt, a long-range effort from Soufiane Rahimi valued at 0.02 expected goals.
The opening goal altered the match flow. It highlighted Ounahi’s tendency to challenge prevailing patterns on the field.
Ounahi has also spoken publicly on social issues. Morocco will co-host the 2026 World Cup and is advancing infrastructure projects estimated at 190 billion dollars. Youth unemployment exceeds 30 percent, and healthcare services face criticism. Protests in September 2025 followed the deaths of eight women in childbirth, with demonstrators questioning priorities between stadium construction and hospital resources.
Ounahi became the first Moroccan player to voice support for the protests. He gained prominence after the 2022 World Cup and has maintained strong performances. In the match against Canada, he covered significant distance and contributed defensively as well as offensively.
Morocco advanced despite limited attacking output. Canada recorded more shots and higher expected goals. Ounahi’s two goals proved decisive in securing qualification for the quarterfinals.
