The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project reached a new milestone on Sunday when tunnelling began using India’s largest rail tunnel boring machine. The machine, launched from Vikhroli, will dig a 6-kilometre single-tube tunnel that will carry both the up and down tracks.
The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited said the machine will pass under crowded urban zones, multi-storeyed buildings, roads, the Mithi River and other key infrastructure.
The overall project includes a 21-kilometre underground section. A 16-kilometre stretch between Sawli in Ghansoli and Bandra Kurla Complex will be built with tunnel boring machines, while the remaining 5 kilometres were completed earlier using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method.
