Merchant Navy officers Sreekanth E.G. and Adith U.S. spent years making short films before taking a break from work to produce a feature. Their second project, School Chale Hum, a Malayalam children’s film with fantasy elements, was among six entries considered for the 55th Kerala State Film Awards. The jury declined to award any film in the category, stating that none reflected a child’s viewpoint and that the young performers did not speak in an age-appropriate manner.
The assessment drew particular attention to School Chale Hum, much of which shows children engaged in typical childhood activities. Despite a modest budget and occasional technical shortcomings, the film’s sincere approach and committed cast have drawn notice since its recent OTT release.
“The jury’s remarks surprised us,” said Adith. “Yet the same day the film was accepted by a children’s festival in Finland, which eased the disappointment.”
Shooting took place over ten vacation days at a school in Kannur. A two-day camp helped the young actors adjust to the process. With careful preparation, the team completed the school sequences on schedule. The filmmakers note that independent productions still face challenges in reaching audiences, but they are pleased the film is now being seen more widely.
