Moscow: The Kremlin described the International Olympic Committee’s decision to lift many restrictions on Russia as an important step. The move brings Russia closer to fielding a full team at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The IOC ended the provisional suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee and told sports bodies that Russian athletes no longer require special vetting to compete as neutrals. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the change supports athletes’ rights to take part in international events. He noted that sports authorities will continue their efforts to ensure full participation. The IOC guidance is not mandatory for individual sports federations. Athletics has already declined to follow the recommendation, and no immediate changes are expected for soccer events such as Euro 2028 or future World Cups. FIFA stated it will review the IOC decision before taking further action with stakeholders. Last year FIFA invited Russia to a youth football festival in Azerbaijan after the IOC suggested allowing Russian youth teams to use national symbols.
