Novak Djokovic described his loss as a decisive defeat and noted that attacking Sinner’s opening serve is nearly impossible. Alexander Zverev therefore targeted every other aspect of the game. Aware of his weaker grass-court record and a long losing streak to Sinner, he had little option but to take risks.
Zverev increased the power of his groundstrokes and served aggressively. Yet, like Djokovic days earlier, he found these adjustments insufficient against an in-form opponent. The 24-year-old Italian countered effectively, mixed in drop shots and secured a second successive Wimbledon title. Zverev’s recent head-to-head record fell to 0-10, though he produced his strongest grass-court display to date.
The match featured narrow margins throughout its three hours and 46 minutes, with only six break points created and the first break occurring after 34 games.
An extended 22-shot rally opened the contest. Both players’ strong serving made return patterns decisive from the start.
Zverev initially held serve quickly and pressured Sinner’s delivery more effectively. The top seed remained steady under pressure and limited opportunities.
A double fault in the eighth game offered Sinner a break chance in the opening set, but he missed a forehand. The set reached a tie-break, which stayed on serve until Zverev earned a set point. Sinner saved it with a drop shot and forehand winner, then held with an ace. Zverev claimed the set on his second opportunity.
After receiving treatment for Type 1 diabetes, Zverev stayed competitive but began to lose accuracy late in the second set. Sinner capitalised, converting his opportunities to win the tie-break despite lower first-serve percentage.
Sinner created his first break point only after two hours and 40 minutes in the third set. A missed chance followed a slip by Zverev. Later, a double fault handed Sinner the first break of the match, allowing him to close the set.
Zverev remained in contention in the fourth set, yet Sinner maintained momentum and finished with a 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4 victory for his 100th Grand Slam match win.
