The United States carried out new airstrikes targeting Iran early Sunday, according to US Central Command. President Donald Trump authorized the operation. The action followed the deaths of two American service members who were responding to Iranian missile and drone attacks in Jordan.
CENTCOM reported that one additional service member is missing, while four others sustained injuries and have since been released from hospitals in Jordan. The names of the deceased will not be released until their families are informed.
The strikes focused on reducing Iran’s capacity to disrupt commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and on Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps units linked to the Jordan attack.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the loss of the two service members would reinforce US determination. He noted that their sacrifice strengthens resolve amid the ongoing conflict.
Iranian media reported strikes near the southern port of Sirik and Hajiabad, with no casualties confirmed so far.
Iran indicated the conflict may escalate further. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that the United States would face severe consequences and accused Washington of breaking agreements, claiming the president’s commitments lack value.
The remarks followed renewed exchanges of strikes after a recent ceasefire ended, raising fears of broader regional fighting centered on the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused the US of seeking control over the waterway, while Washington charged Tehran with endangering shipping and attempting to dominate traffic. The United Arab Emirates urged an immediate halt to the escalation and a return to talks, stating that attacks on civilian sites violate international law.
