The Supreme Court on Thursday overturned the bail granted to the main accused in the murder of her husband during a honeymoon trip in Meghalaya last year. The court directed her to surrender to police within three weeks.
A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and P B Varale approved a request from the Meghalaya government to challenge the earlier bail decision.
The court noted that if the trial is not completed within six months, the accused may apply for bail again.
The ruling followed an earlier indication from the court that the accused should surrender and stand trial, especially while key witnesses are being examined. During Tuesday’s hearing, the bench asked her lawyer to confirm whether she would surrender voluntarily.
A separate bench had previously considered referring the state government’s appeal to a larger bench due to conflicting rulings on whether arrest grounds must be provided in writing.
The accused, from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, was detained in June 2025 over the death of her husband, a businessman. The couple had gone missing in the Sohra area of Meghalaya on May 23, 2025, and his body was found in a gorge on June 2.
Police allege she plotted with others, including a suspected accomplice, to kill him for financial reasons.
