Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha rejected the government’s proposal for a discussion on student matters on Monday. He insisted that the Union Home Minister must first respond to a specific query about who approved the reported use of force against demonstrators in Delhi. The opposition had not sought a general address in Parliament but rather a direct explanation regarding authorization of police measures against protesters on June 20. The leader claimed that pellet guns were deployed and students faced beatings with lathis fitted with nails. He questioned whether the Home Minister had given the order. If the minister had authorized the action, responsibility would rest with him, the leader stated. Lack of awareness would indicate failure to oversee operations. In either case, the minister should resign. Clarity was also sought on who within the ministry might have approved the steps if the minister had not. The opposition further demanded an apology from the Prime Minister over the events and answers regarding alleged theft at a religious site by individuals close to him. These three points formed the core demands. The leader dismissed any offer of broad discussion as irrelevant until the specific questions received responses. Similar concerns were raised about student demonstrations in another state, with condemnation of any violence against peaceful protesters. The state government was urged to maintain dialogue and address grievances promptly. The party president echoed calls for an account of the equipment used during the Delhi incident and reiterated demands for an apology from the Prime Minister.
