The Asiatic lion population in Gujarat, India, has reached 891 as of May 2025, marking a 32.2% increase from the 674 counted in 2020. Released by the Gujarat Forest Department, this 16th census indicates a 70% growth over the past decade, with 330 adult females signaling high growth potential. 

Key Findings of the 2025 Census

  • Total Population: 891 lions (approx. 196 males, 330 females, 140 sub-adults, and 225 cubs).
  • Growth Rate: A 32.2% increase in five years, reflecting successful conservation efforts.
  • Territorial Expansion: Over 44% of the population (507 lions) now resides outside traditional protected areas.
  • New Habitats: Barda Wildlife Sanctuary is emerging as a second home for the species, with 17 lions reported.
  • District Distribution: Amreli recorded the highest concentration with 257 lions.
  • Distribution Range: The lions have expanded their range across all 11 districts in the Saurashtra region. 

This surge underscores the effectiveness of conservation measures, including habitat management and community protection efforts.
