Several everyday kitchen items should never be rinsed down the sink, as they can lead to expensive plumbing repairs. Cooking oils, fats and grease are among the main culprits. When warm they flow easily, but they cool and solidify inside pipes, gradually narrowing the passage for water. Rice and pasta present another risk. Both continue to absorb moisture and expand after cooking, potentially creating clogs in bends or low points of the drainage system. Flour mixed with water forms a sticky paste that coats pipe walls and traps additional debris. Raw meat scraps, especially those containing fat or tissue, can lodge in pipes or contribute to grease build-ups. Leftover food in general is best kept out of the drain. Even with a waste disposal unit, many items do not break down fully and may combine with other waste to cause blockages. Disposing of these materials in sealed containers or food waste bins helps maintain clear pipes and avoids repeated professional call-outs.
