A child’s errors, grades, conduct or appearance should not serve as public amusement at social events. Remarks such as criticizing math ability or listening habits in front of relatives can cause embarrassment and weaken trust. Matters requiring discussion should be handled privately and calmly. Children need guidance along with respect for their dignity. Respect for elders and family ties remains important, yet it should not require children to overlook their own discomfort. Clear boundaries help children identify emotions, communicate effectively and respect limits set by others. Social occasions can thus illustrate that kindness need not involve surrendering personal boundaries. At times the most helpful step for a parent is to stand with the child and confirm that no uncomfortable action is required.
