Success on dating apps depends more on storytelling than simple lists of attributes. Recent research indicates that presenting personal experiences as narratives builds empathy and fosters deeper connections. This method counters the impersonal feel of online dating, leading to greater romantic interest from others. Adopt a narrative style to differentiate your profile effectively.

The Power of Narratives

In the era of quick swipes, distinguishing oneself amid numerous profiles is challenging. While appealing photos are important, the presentation of information plays a crucial role. Experts have identified a key strategy for increasing attraction.

A study from the American Psychological Association demonstrates that profiles incorporating stories about one’s life generate more interest than those merely listing characteristics. Published in the Psychology of Popular Media, the research shows that narrative profiles promote empathy and connection, drawing more attention from potential partners.

‘People are drawn to stories, but many craft their profiles like inventories. It’s not just physical attributes or goals that spark interest; it’s the full narrative. Bullet points fail to convey that,’ explained lead researcher Gurit Birnbaum, a psychology professor at Reichman University in Israel.

Drawing from marketing studies, which show that narratives boost consumer engagement and sales through emotional bonds, the team explored if this applies to dating. They ran three experiments with 594 participants.

Participants viewed profiles with identical details presented differently: as straightforward facts or woven into stories. For instance, a list might state someone plays guitar, studies economics, and enjoys travel. The story version could describe receiving a guitar from a grandfather in childhood and how music shaped their life.

In another test, photo profiles showed neutral scenes in non-narrative formats versus images depicting daily routines like exercising or socializing. A third combined text and photos.

Results consistently showed higher empathy for narrative profiles, which correlated with increased romantic interest.

Birnbaum noted that for those frustrated by the detached aspect of apps, storytelling can help. ‘It humanizes profiles, promotes real emotional involvement, and combats the commodification in online dating, encouraging users to see others as individuals rather than options.’

Consider framing your qualities as engaging tales to increase responses.
