Sony is currently developing an R-rated animated film based on the popular FromSoftware action role-playing game Bloodborne, even as a remake or sequel for the game remains unlikely in the near future. The announcement came during CinemaCon this week, with popular online personality Jacksepticeye attached as a producer.

Specifics about the movie are limited, but an accurate portrayal would feature a hunter exploring the monster-filled, maze-like city of Yharnam, inspired by Gothic architecture.

Sanford Panitch, head of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, stated at the event that the film would remain faithful to the game’s intense and violent essence, according to reports from Variety.

Seรกn William McLoughlin, known as Jacksepticeye, shared on social media: ‘It’s a dream come true to announce I’m producing an R-rated animated Bloodborne movie with Sony. I can’t reveal more yet, but I’ll dedicate all my effort to it.’

No release date has been set for the project.

Regarding a potential Bloodborne remake, fans have long requested an updated version or follow-up, but neither Sony nor FromSoftware has provided updates. Reports indicate that the now-closed Bluepoint Games proposed a remake to Sony in early 2025 following the cancellation of a live-service God of War initiative, but it was not approved.

A Bloomberg article noted that Sony viewed the financial aspects of a Bloodborne project positively, yet FromSoftware opposed the idea. Sony closed Bluepoint Games earlier this year.

Sony holds the intellectual property rights to Bloodborne. The game, created by FromSoftware, debuted exclusively on PlayStation 4 in 2015 and is capped at 30 frames per second. It lacks a PlayStation 5 enhancement or native version to improve performance on the latest console.

Bloodborne has not been adapted for other systems, despite calls for a PC edition with enhanced graphics and speed. It is considered among the finest video games ever produced.
