Usha Uthup describes Trincas as her personal sanctuary, evoking deep emotion each time she enters the venue. On July 19, the singer and author will join historian Anand Puri, a third-generation family member associated with the establishment, for a discussion titled When Park Street Sings. Moderated by Shonali Muthalaly, the session will explore Uthup’s career alongside the history of Trincas, Park Street, and Kolkata’s nightlife. For decades, the venue attracted diverse visitors seeking music and entertainment. In the 1960s, Park Street served as a hub for live performances, with restaurants hosting bands that formed a local circuit. Trincas stood out for its large dance floor and regular jam sessions involving young musicians. Patrons included industrialists, performers, and athletes. Uthup recalls an early encounter with actor Uttam Kumar during one of her shows. Puri, preparing a book on the venue’s century-long story, notes how the location became a central spot for entertainment, drawing crowds that moved between venues. Earlier performers included Engelbert Humperdinck and Biddu Appaiah. Uthup’s arrival in the late 1960s quickly increased attendance, surprising audiences with her style. Puri has compiled stories from former visitors worldwide for his project and upcoming publication, which will be introduced at the event.
