Authorities from the police and the prisons ombudsman have launched an investigation into the death of a 16-year-old boy detained at a youth offender institution in southwest London. The teenager was discovered unresponsive at Feltham Young Offender Institution on Monday evening. Paramedics provided treatment before transporting him to a hospital, where he passed away just before midnight. Such incidents involving minors in youth detention facilities are uncommon; the last similar case in England or Wales occurred in June 2019. A representative from the Metropolitan Police stated that the death is currently classified as unexpected. An autopsy is planned for Friday, April 24. Investigators are moving quickly to determine the exact details and are exploring every possible lead. Deborah Coles, director of the charity Inquest, which aids families affected by deaths in state custody, commented: ‘Children should not lose their lives while under state supervision, especially in prison settings. Imprisoning young people is inherently damaging and unsafe. This incident serves as a critical call to action. The government should redirect funding from punitive measures and incarceration toward community-oriented support programs to avoid additional tragedies.’ Enver Solomon, chief executive of the social justice organization Nacro, expressed: ‘We are deeply grieved by the loss of a young person at Feltham YOI. Our sympathies go to his family during this difficult period. Although the full facts surrounding the death remain unclear, it highlights that the system for detaining youth is inadequate. Reports frequently highlight issues with security and elevated rates of aggression. The government needs to accelerate changes to the youth justice framework, including strategies to shut down facilities like Feltham and establish smaller, secure residences for children that are more appropriate, successful, and secure.’
