District Collector Sumit Kumar inaugurated a newly built girls hostel at B.S. Kannan Government High School and Junior College on Saturday. He called it a significant move to improve educational access for girls from economically weaker families in the area.
Speaking to students, teachers and alumni, the Collector said the hostel would offer safe and affordable lodging to about 120 girls, helping them continue studies without high accommodation costs. Many rural and low-income students previously spent large sums on rent, and the new facility would reduce that burden while ensuring security.
The hostel was funded through contributions from alumni, donors and supporters of education. The Collector noted that quality facilities could encourage more parents to send daughters for higher studies, raise enrolment and help reduce dropouts. He urged former students to keep backing school projects and announced a 25 lakh rupee plan to improve sports infrastructure, including a running track and lighting. Built at a cost of roughly 1.10 crore rupees, the hostel is expected to save each student 50,000 to 60,000 rupees a year on housing and meals.
