The Coonoor Consumer Protection Association has urged the Regional Transport Office in The Nilgiris to take strict measures under the Motor Vehicles Act against private minibuses charging passengers more than the approved fares.
Association president S. Manogaran stated that the RTO was informed about the overcharging by operators across the district. Officials later inspected several vehicles and issued fines in Udhagamandalam and Coonoor.
The association noted that these steps received media coverage. However, it added that the same minibuses, including those already checked, continued to collect higher fares. The group described the inspections and penalties as ineffective.
It called for firm enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act against operators who persist with excess charges. The association also requested transparent governance to shield the public from exploitation.
