Three Indian crew members died after US Navy strikes hit three merchant ships carrying Indian sailors near the Strait of Hormuz on June 8, 10 and 11. The vessels Marivex, Settebello and Jalveer came under attack in separate incidents. Settebello was struck by Hellfire missiles. All crew on Marivex and Jalveer were rescued, but three Indians aboard Settebello, including a chief engineer, an engine fitter and a deck cadet, were killed.
US Central Command stated the ships had breached a blockade while transporting Iranian oil. Ship operators rejected parts of the claim, noting that at least one vessel had been stationary for days without prior warning.
In another case, a 35-year-old Indian sailor on MT Celestial died from illness on June 11 after repeated distress calls to the US Navy went unanswered. His body remained on board for three days off Oman’s coast before being lowered by crane on June 14. The Indian Embassy in Oman is arranging repatriation.
India condemned the attacks and sought clarification from the US mission in New Delhi. Washington maintained its position, with officials stating that unauthorized shipments through the strait would not be permitted. The incidents have left Indian seafarers caught in the middle of the escalating maritime tensions.
