Jammu and Kashmir Police have set up a Special Investigation Team following the death of a 30-year-old local auto driver in an alleged police shooting earlier this week. The event sparked protests and a complete shutdown in Doda district, along with an open FIR filed against unidentified individuals.

Police reports indicate the victim, from Cheeka village, was shot during a clash between officers and suspected cattle smugglers in Jai Valley near Bhaderwah late Thursday. Some sources describe the shooting as an accidental discharge, while residents call for an independent inquiry.

An FIR lists charges including attempted murder, causing hurt to deter a public servant, assault on officials, theft and other violations under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Officers had established a checkpoint after receiving information about possible bovine smuggling. Around midnight, personnel noticed suspicious activity, questioned individuals who then allegedly attacked the team and tried to seize weapons. In the struggle a firearm discharged, wounding the driver and three officers. The suspects escaped.

All injured were taken to Bhaderwah Sub-District Hospital and later referred to the Government Medical College Hospital in Doda, where the driver died en route.

A senior officer confirmed that an SIT headed by the SDPO Bhaderwah has been formed to examine the case.

The shooting led to demonstrations and a bandh in Doda, prompting suspension of internet services in Doda and nearby Kishtwar. Shops stayed closed in Doda town and areas including Thathri, Gandoh and Kishtwar after calls by local committees. The shutdown remained peaceful.

The body was released to the family after post-mortem on Friday and buried in Bhalla that evening.
