Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai stepped down from the party on Friday, concluding weeks of speculation about his future and possible plans to form a new political group. BJP state in-charge Nitin Nabin accepted the resignation, concluding a period of uncertainty regarding the former IPS officer’s intentions. The move occurred even as BJP leaders attempted to convince Annamalai to remain. Party sources indicated that senior figures held out hope until the final stages that he might change his mind. Earlier in the week, Annamalai met in New Delhi with Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national general secretary BL Santhosh. He reportedly discussed the political conditions in Tamil Nadu and explained his reasons for leaving. During these talks, he conveyed his resignation decision verbally to the leadership. Within the BJP, the departure is seen as a significant loss for its goals in Tamil Nadu. Annamalai had become a leading figure for the party in the state, boosting cadre morale and increasing visibility through strong campaigning and outreach efforts. These activities helped raise the BJP’s profile as a more active presence. Under his leadership, the party’s vote share in Tamil Nadu rose from 3.6 per cent in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls to 11.2 per cent in 2024, marking its best result there. However, the party won no seats, and Annamalai lost in Coimbatore. In April 2025, Nainar Nagendran replaced him as state president in a step viewed as aimed at improving ties with AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami. The BJP then joined the 2026 Assembly elections as a junior ally in the AIADMK-led coalition. It secured one seat but saw its vote share drop below 3 per cent from the previous year’s level.
