A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a man in Houston after he tried to evade arrest by vehicle during a Tuesday operation, the agency reported. The Department of Homeland Security identified the individual as Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was residing in the country without authorization, according to the Associated Press. Agents were carrying out a targeted enforcement action against him, and he died later at a hospital. An ICE spokesperson said officers attempted a vehicle stop around 6:50 a.m. Central Time on July 7, 2026, to arrest an undocumented immigrant. The driver tried to flee the scene. Officials stated the man ignored stop commands and attempted to ram an agent, who fired in self-defense. His car then struck an ICE vehicle. The FBI Houston field office is investigating a possible assault on a federal officer and processed the scene. Democratic Representative Sylvia Garcia said the shooting took place in her Texas district during an ICE operation. She called for independent verification and full review of all evidence. At least six deadly shootings by federal officers have occurred since the start of intensified immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.
