The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has sent a notice to the messaging service Telegram regarding the alleged widespread sharing of pirated films and OTT material on its channels. The directive requires the company to implement corrective steps promptly and provide an Action Taken Report within 15 days.
Telegram must move quickly against groups and channels distributing copyrighted films and web series without authorization. The action reflects rising worries about online piracy harming India’s entertainment sector.
The ministry instructed the platform to adopt stronger controls against unauthorized content distribution and to improve safeguards against copyright violations. A detailed compliance report must be submitted by the 15-day deadline.
The initiative seeks to protect India’s creator economy and the rights of filmmakers, broadcasters, OTT services, producers and distributors. Piracy remains a persistent issue, with unauthorized copies of new releases often appearing on messaging apps soon after launch, leading to significant losses for the industry.
