The Monsoon session of Parliament is expected to start on July 20 and continue for three weeks, according to officials cited by PTI on June 30. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs has not yet made a final decision. Monsoon and Winter sessions typically feature 20 sittings over four weeks, though shorter sessions have occurred before. The session follows the ruling BJP’s wins in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry. Internal divisions within the TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) are also expected to feature. A ruling by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on requests from 20 TMC and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs for recognition as separate groups remains pending. In the Rajya Sabha, recent oaths by newly elected and re-elected members have shifted numbers further toward the NDA. The previous session ended with the defeat in the Lower House of a Constitution amendment bill on women’s reservation in legislatures from 2029 and an increase in Lok Sabha seats. The government is now revising the bill to raise seats across states by 50 percent uniformly. Concerns over population-based seat increases persist among southern parties. Speculation also surrounds a possible cabinet reshuffle in the Narendra Modi-led government, which could be announced before the session starts. Reports indicate the changes may coincide with the appointment of a new BJP team under president Nitin Nabin.
