Reverend Father Eric Mathias took over as principal of St. Paul’s High School in Belagavi, Karnataka, on June 4.
Founded in 1856, the school is among the oldest Catholic institutions in northern Karnataka.
The Jesuit priest, with long experience in education, comes from Udupi district. He has founded and led several schools across Karnataka.
His previous postings include Raichur, Manvi, Mangaluru, Harihar and Sindagi. He has created NGOs and self-help groups, supporting Dalits, economically weaker sections and Devadasi communities through work in education, healthcare, water supply and basic amenities.
Fr. Mathias urged young people to aim high and pursue excellence. “No work is small when it is done with love and sincerity. Always give your best, and inspire others to do the same,” he said.
Outgoing principal Rev. Fr. Simon Fernandes welcomed him. Fr. Fernandes will soon take charge at St. Loyola High School in Margao, Goa.
Fr. Mathias later met Police Commissioner Borase Bhushan Gulabrao, Deputy Commissioner of Police N.V. Baramani and other officers.
Senior journalist Louis Rodrigues, a government-nominated District Minority Committee member, Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Lourduswamy of St. John the Baptist Church and others attended the event.
