Piers Morgan has faced backlash on social media for a post aimed at England captain Harry Kane ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal against Argentina. The broadcaster suggested recent U.S. independence celebrations could motivate the squad.
Morgan wrote that England stands two wins from the title in America, days after the United States marked 250 years since independence from Britain. He added that the occasion should inspire Kane and teammates to succeed for King George III.
Social media users criticized the post for mixing politics with football. Some noted that many nations had ended British rule and urged moving beyond historical events. Others questioned the timing and warned of alienating audiences.
Morgan has frequently criticized Lionel Messi due to his friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo. Before the match he named Jude Bellingham the tournament’s top player. After Argentina’s games he questioned referee decisions and mocked a missed penalty by Messi. Morgan also leaves Messi out of his all-time greatest player lists, favoring Maradona for Argentina instead.
