The disagreement over the legitimate TMC reached the capital on Thursday when rebel MLAs, headed by West Bengal Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and other commissioners. They asserted control of a two-thirds majority within the party. The Election Commission had arranged the session with the rebel group before its full bench at noon. The delegation included Banerjee and nine other MLAs and spoke with officials at Nirvachan Sadan on Ashoka Road. After the discussion, Banerjee told reporters that the group represents TMC because it holds more than two-thirds of the MLAs along with most councillors and zila parishad members. The meeting occurred during continued tensions with the faction led by Mamata Banerjee, whom the rebels had removed as chairperson in a special session the previous month.
