Mumbai, July 9, 2026: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the State Assembly that a seven-member expert committee has been formed to prepare recommendations for implementing a Uniform Civil Code across the state. Former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai will chair the panel. The group will examine legal, social and administrative issues linked to the code and deliver a report with suggestions within six months. The government plans to prepare a draft bill based on the findings and present it to both houses of the legislature during the winter session in Nagpur. The move represents a formal step by the state administration toward the goals of Article 44 of the Indian Constitution. The committee includes three retired judges, former senior officials and experts from law and social fields.
