Following the West Bengal election loss in which Mamata Banerjee was defeated by rival Suvendu Adhikari, reports suggested she might seek a parliamentary seat through a bypoll. A Bengali newspaper claimed the Trinamool Congress asked former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to persuade ex-cricketer Yusuf Pathan to step down as Baharampur MP. Ganguly has rejected the reports, calling them reckless and untrue.
