Blue Origin, the American space firm established by Jeff Bezos, plans to achieve a key advancement on Sunday by reusing a rocket booster for the initial time during the launch of its heavy-lift New Glenn vehicle. The event is set to occur at Cape Canaveral between 6:45 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. local time, deploying a communications satellite for AST SpaceMobile. The almost 100-meter-high rocket has completed two prior missions using fresh boosters, marking this as its debut reuse effort, according to AFP reports. This development represents an important progress in Blue Origin’s strategy to lower launch expenses and enhance operational pace, as it vies with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, a leader in reusable rocket systems. The booster for Sunday’s operation was retrieved from a November flight, where it executed a precise upright landing on an Atlantic Ocean vesselโ€”a demanding technical achievement. It underwent refurbishment, including full engine replacements and other adjustments for repeated use. An earlier recovery try for a New Glenn booster in January 2025 ended in failure due to engines not restarting during descent. Following takeoff, the rocket’s stages will detach, allowing the upper section to deliver the satellite to orbit while the booster descends for another maritime landing attempt. Observers are paying close attention, as New Glenn plays a vital role in Blue Origin’s future goals, especially its involvement in NASA’s Artemis initiative, which seeks to send astronauts back to the Moon by 2028. Blue Origin is in direct contention with SpaceX for creating lunar landing systems under the program, contributing to the U.S. effort to restore human lunar exploration amid rising challenges from China.
