Film director Werner Herzog explores the boundaries between science and legend in his latest documentary, ‘Ghost Elephants,’ which debuted at the Venice Film Festival last year. The film tracks conservationist Steve Boyes on an expedition in Angola to locate a rumored herd of exceptionally large elephants.

Boyes suspects these animals, potentially linked to a famous oversized specimen at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, roam the vast Bi plateau, an area comparable in size to England with limited human presence.

Over ten years, Boyes has gathered reports from San trackers, experts in interpreting environmental signs through skills developed in one of the world’s oldest hunter-gatherer societies. Discovering these elephants could enhance knowledge of elephant genetics, size variations, and movement in under-researched African regions.

Herzog’s distinctive voiceover adds philosophical depth, comparing the pursuit to literary obsessions while emphasizing the blend of scientific method and human imagination. The documentary depicts the team’s preparations, interactions with local communities, and challenges in the field.

Rather than focusing on definitive results, the film highlights the process of scientific inquiry: forming hypotheses, gathering observations, and making tentative conclusions. Cinematography captures the landscape’s scale through overhead views and detailed shots of tracking techniques.

The San trackers’ methods are presented as a legitimate form of knowledge, refined over generations. Broader issues like environmental changes, historical colonialism, and resource extraction are addressed subtly, illustrating tensions in conservation efforts.

Ultimately, ‘Ghost Elephants’ portrays the search as a symbol of enduring curiosity and the value of questioning the unknown, even without complete answers.
