Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education, Information Technology and Electronics Nara Lokesh announced that the state government will establish a world-class Sports Centre of Excellence in partnership with JSW Group. The initiative aims to strengthen the sports ecosystem and develop athletes capable of competing at international levels.
During a dinner meeting with elite athletes chosen for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games at his residence in Undavalli on Friday, Mr. Lokesh stated that the government intends to provide top-tier training facilities, modern infrastructure and international-level coaching. A framework for the proposed centre is being developed following JSW’s agreement to support the project.
The Minister discussed challenges faced by the athletes, their training needs and the government’s role in advancing sports. Several athletes recalled that Andhra Pradesh had previously produced strong talent through experienced coaches and a Centre of Excellence set up in Guntur under the earlier TDP administration. They noted concern that many coaches were removed after the 2019 government change.
Mr. Lokesh responded that sports policies should remain stable across political transitions. He assured the athletes that the government would recruit world-class coaches and build an ecosystem to produce champions.
He highlighted ongoing efforts, including plans for sports arenas in every district and special focus on sports training alongside education. The Andhra Cricket Association’s promotion of multiple disciplines was noted, along with the need to raise parental awareness about encouraging children in sports.
The Minister mentioned a 3% reservation for sportspersons in last year’s DSC teacher recruitment and the introduction of “No Bag Day” every Saturday in government schools to promote sports and extracurricular activities.
Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu stressed the value of advanced training technology and sports injury recovery facilities, referencing South Korea’s use of robotics in archery coaching.
Mr. Lokesh shared observations from a visit to Singapore Sports School regarding AI applications in athlete training and encouraged athletes to adopt new technologies. AI is already used to evaluate health and fitness in government programmes.
The government has released ₹2.23 crore to support training for 18 athletes selected for this year’s Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Para Commonwealth Games, with further assistance promised if needed. Athletes were urged to perform well internationally and bring recognition to Andhra Pradesh and the nation.
