The quarterfinal round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup concludes with a match between title holders Argentina and undefeated Switzerland at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The victor advances to the semifinals against either England or Norway.
Argentina advanced from Group J without major issues but faced tougher tests in the knockout rounds. They needed extra time to defeat Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32. Their round of 16 game against Egypt was more intense, as they trailed 2-0 late before scoring three times through Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández for a 3-2 win.
Switzerland topped Group B and then beat Algeria 2-0 in the round of 32. They followed that with a strong defensive performance against Colombia, holding them scoreless for 120 minutes before winning a penalty shootout 4-3. This marks their first quarterfinal appearance since 1954.
Attention centers on Lionel Messi, who at age 39 has scored in every game and shares the lead in the Golden Boot race with eight goals. He has also missed two penalties but contributed a goal and assist in the comeback versus Egypt.
Switzerland will miss midfielder Johan Manzambi due to injury, though key players Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji and Gregor Kobel are available. Argentina has no new injury concerns and can select its preferred lineup.
Past results favor Argentina, who remain unbeaten against Switzerland in seven meetings. They have also eliminated the Swiss in two prior World Cup meetings, in 1966 and 2014.
Switzerland aims for its first semifinal since 1954 while Argentina seeks a second straight title. The contest pits one of the tournament’s strongest defenses against one of the sport’s leading players.
