As India shift from the rapid pace of T20 cricket to the challenges of the longest format, captain Shubman Gill says nothing matches the appeal of Test matches. The team starts its red-ball campaign with a one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur on Saturday. Although the game carries no World Test Championship points, Gill stressed its value for building form before key fixtures ahead.

In a BCCI video, Gill called Test cricket the most rewarding format. Success here brings the greatest personal satisfaction, he noted, highlighting the feel of whites and the traditional baggy cap as unmatched elements of the sport’s origins.

The quick switch from recent IPL games creates physical and mental hurdles, with daytime temperatures near 40 degrees after night matches. Gill pointed out the technical adjustments required and said these demands explain why the format earns global respect.

The squad includes several emerging players Gill has seen in national camps. He expressed belief in their ability to contribute over many years, based on their performances in series and tour matches at home and abroad.

For Gill, captaining India at his home venue adds special meaning. The Punjab batter, who developed his game locally, described the chance to lead his country on familiar ground as a significant privilege.

He also warned against underestimating Afghanistan, noting their growth since the sides first met in Tests in 2018 and their strong showings in recent ICC events. Their talent makes them a competitive opponent, he added.

Gill views the fixture as useful preparation despite the lack of points, with nine championship Tests still to come before the WTC final. The match offers a chance to refine combinations and restore red-ball rhythm for the young side.
