Mumbai: Mitchell McClenaghan, a former New Zealand cricketer, has advised that Chennai Super Kings consider utilizing experienced wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni as an Impact Substitute, particularly in run chases during the 2026 Indian Premier League season. Dhoni has sat out four of CSK’s matches this year because of a calf injury. Although he participated in a brief net session before the team’s game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday, reports from ESPNcricinfo indicate he is not expected to participate, having only dealt with throwdowns. During a discussion on Star Sports, JioStar analyst McClenaghan stated that if Dhoni recovers, CSK should introduce him as an Impact Player to maximize his batting skills in scenarios requiring rapid scoring without extensive running. This approach would enable him to deliver explosive hits, bolster the team’s lower middle order, and help him rediscover his form. ‘If MS Dhoni regains fitness, CSK ought to employ him as the Impact Player. Should the leadership decide they require a quick influx of runs from him, particularly in pursuits, designating him as the Impact Substitute would optimize his batting prowess. In this capacity, he might avoid heavy running, simply entering to launch the ball over the boundary and execute his finishing role effectively. His bold shot selection would prove valuable for Chennai in high-target chases,’ McClenaghan explained. ‘This seems an effective method to reintegrate Dhoni. His involvement would significantly enhance CSK’s lower middle order,’ he continued. So far in IPL 2026, CSK has secured victory in just one of their four outings. Following three straight losses, they broke the streak by defeating Delhi Capitals by 23 runs.
