San Francisco authorities reported that a 20-year-old individual allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman early Friday morning. The incident took place around 4:12 a.m. at the executive’s North Beach property. Police have detained the suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, in connection with the event. The same person is also accused of making threats to burn down OpenAI’s main office in the city. According to a police statement posted on X that morning, officers investigated a fire at the location after the man reportedly launched the incendiary device. The blaze affected an outer gate, and the perpetrator escaped on foot. Officials confirmed no one was hurt. Roughly an hour later, at about 5 a.m., law enforcement responded to alerts from a facility in the Mission Bay area, home to OpenAI’s headquarters, regarding a man who vowed to ignite the structure. Officers identified him as the individual from the prior occurrence and took him into custody without delay. OpenAI executives informed employees about the situation, as noted by Wired. The internal communication stated: ‘Around 3:45 a.m. Pacific Time, an unknown person neared Sam’s home and tossed a flammable object toward it. The item landed close by and burned out. No one was injured, and damage was slight.’ Additional information is expected shortly.
