Syrian security forces have apprehended a former government official accused of orchestrating a well-known massacre of civilians, as reported by the interior ministry. The individual, Amjad Youssef, who became a high-profile fugitive after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, was captured in the Ghab plain region approximately 30 miles from Hama through a targeted operation, according to Interior Minister Anas Khattab’s social media statement on Friday. Images released by the ministry depicted the 40-year-old in prison attire, while online videos showed him in a vehicle under guard, with visible injuries, as uniformed personnel verbally abused and struck him. A security source informed Reuters that Youssef had been in hiding in the area since Assad’s removal at the end of 2024. He is a key figure linked to the 2013 Tadamon massacre in southern Damascus, where around 288 civilians, including 12 children, were killed. The incident was captured in videos filmed by the perpetrators and later leaked to European researchers, with portions made public by the Guardian in 2022. Note: Material includes disturbing visuals. Over two dozen recordings showed Syrian military personnel and allied militias guiding blindfolded civilians to a trench, forcing them in, and executing them by gunfire. The bodies were then incinerated and covered using heavy machinery, all documented by those involved. This evidence provided rare insight into the harsh tactics used by Assad’s forces against civilians in contested zones. The videos surfaced unusually: a whistleblower found them on an official computer and covertly shared them with activists in Paris, who forwarded them to Dutch researchers Annsar Shahhoud and Professor Uğur Ümit Üngör from the University of Amsterdam and the NIOD Institute. For two years, they identified the site, victims, and suspects, including a leader with a notable scar on his left eyebrow, dubbed ‘the shadow man.’ Shahhoud located a matching social media profile belonging to intelligence officer Amjad Youssef. Posing as a supporter of the regime from Europe, she conducted and secretly recorded interviews with him over a year. Following the Guardian’s exposure through articles and a podcast series featuring interview clips, the U.S. State Department and European Union imposed sanctions on Youssef, and France initiated a war crimes probe. The arrest sparked celebrations in Tadamon, with gatherings anticipated after Friday prayers. Local resident Maher Rahima expressed overwhelming joy mixed with sorrow, emphasizing the need to remember the slain children and women. Witnesses indicate the killings persisted until at least 2015, with the actual number of deaths possibly surpassing 1,000, many buried in communal graves nearby. Tadamon has come to represent the abuses inflicted on Syrian civilians. After Assad’s downfall, journalists, activists, and citizens visited to locate graves and gather testimonies. The massacre location is marked on digital maps, and locals call it ‘Amjad Youssef’s pit.’ Ahmed Adra, a resident and community member, told Reuters that families of victims had been rejoicing since dawn. ‘We plan to place white roses at the site and honor the victims, affirming that justice prevails,’ he said. Youssef’s detention marks a significant achievement for the administration led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, who assumed control 18 months ago vowing to prosecute those responsible for Assad-era offenses. However, accountability efforts have varied, with some former influential figures securing agreements for information, weapons, or hostages in return for apparent protection from charges. This includes Fadi Saqr, a ex-leader of the pro-Assad National Defence Forces militia, whose units participated in the Tadamon killings. Saqr has
