WhatsApp has started allowing users worldwide to reserve usernames. The feature aims to let people connect without sharing phone numbers. The company will begin reservations on Monday, June 29, with full availability later this year. Users will get an in-app notice when the option reaches them.

The platform noted that early reservations help users secure preferred names amid billions of accounts. The change means new contacts can be made via username instead of a mobile number.

Usernames function mainly as a privacy tool rather than a public profile. No searchable directory exists, and others must know the exact name to reach someone. Users set or reserve a name in Settings under Account on the latest app version, with a generator available for suggestions.

An optional username key adds further protection. When active, first-time contacts must provide the key to message. Users can update the key at any time.

Once active, the system supports connections in groups or events without exchanging numbers. Businesses and creators may claim matching names used on other Meta services for consistency.

In India, the company is promoting the feature with a campaign. Rollout will continue gradually, with notifications sent when available locally.

To reserve a name when offered, update the app, go to Settings, select Account then Username, and confirm a choice. A key can be added for extra security. If the option is absent, the feature has not reached that account yet.
