Ismael Saibari scored the winning penalty as Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 in a shootout following a 1-1 draw in Monterrey. The result advanced Morocco to the round of 16 and marked an early exit for the Dutch side.
The Netherlands took the lead in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo finished a move started by Crysencio Summerville. Morocco equalized deep in stoppage time through a header by Issa Diop from a cross by Chemsdine Talbi.
Extra time produced no further goals. In the shootout, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved an effort from Summerville to give Morocco the edge. Saibari then converted the decisive kick.
Morocco will next play Canada in Houston. The Netherlands finished their campaign earlier than expected despite entering as a highly ranked team.
